Even though it already was cheap, we decided to make it even cheaper. We just wanted that everyone can try it – JCAD tabula I mean. It’s awesome, it’s great, it’s easy. Once you learn to use it, it’s like riding a bike – you’ll never forget how to do it. Just like me – after a long long winter I started bicycling season today, because the Oulu river under my office window got rid of the ice. It’s spring time! So – click your own JCAD tabula from our store and start your engines! Sorry, your bikes!

The economically challenging year 2009 was still a success to JCAD when counting the companies, which changed to JCAD from some other cad program. The figure is 197 – and this is only in Finland! The decision to change from one cad to another is never an easy one – yet these decisions have to be made from time to time. The reasons can be various – to gain more efficiency, more compatibility, more quality in quantity – you name it. But this is how our customer put it:
“Quantities are so accurate that you can directly base your orders on them.” Jouni Yrjänheikki, Sähköpalvelu J. Yrjänheikki.
“Point count functions well and is quick. Once you get hang of a suitable style and accuracy, it’s easy enough to calculate wiring as well.” Kari Tanskala, Kuusisalo Oy.
“Yes, especially wiring calculation becomes more accurate compared to manual calculation. You can leave out checks.” Esa Lindell, Turun Sähköpalvelu Oy.

We started wondering why JCAD isn’t sold online as early as the autumn of 2008. We then experimented with light Internet sales with JET 2009 – a product that is not an actual cad but an energy certificate tool. We posted an order form on the Jidea website (www.jcad.fi), put a couple of ads on Google, and what do you know – the product started selling. Granted, there was a lot of demand to begin with; drawing up of energy certificates became statutory for buildings of all ages in Finland at the beginning of 2009. But we were still positively surprised by the number of orders, even though the method of delivery was traditional – that is to say, mailing a USB stick.

This led to further thinking: why not sell other products online as well, and in the easiest and most natural way for a software product – that is to say, downloading and licence management would be handled over the Internet. No sooner said than done, and so the project was kicked off. In addition to the market place, we also needed a product suitable for the web. Business area-specific JCADs are robust, professional tools that are introduced to customers in detail before making a purchase decision. Jidea’s sales engineer charts the customer’s design and computing needs, and on that basis, can recommend exactly the right tool from the JCAD toolbox. But online sales require different types of products – which is why we developed JCAD tabula, a software with professional-level features that even non-professionals can use.

During the development we got a bit carried away and made tabula a bit better than originally planned – in fact, it became unbelievably good. We even completely revamped the user interface – we just couldn’t let it be. The end result: tabula was supposed to be a light general cad that can be sold at a very competitive price to everyone, but instead it turned into a high-quality basic cad that competes evenly with AutoCAD LT – except that with tabula the customer receives an insane number of symbol libraries, which the buyer of LT has to pay for separately. And the competitive price… The pilot sales of tabula were begun in June and our sellers were furious. Apparently, the product is way too cheap. Oh well, we decided to keep the price as it was anyway.
